Iโ€™m an undergraduate double-major in Ethics Education and Life Sciences, currently completing my final semester. My academic interests lie at the intersection of moral psychology, cultural evolution, and philosophical inquiry into consciousness. This essay reflects an early stage in that journeyโ€”one that continues to evolve through writing, critique, and imagination

The Meme Within: Why Morality Isnโ€™t in Our Genes

This essay was originally written during my third year as an undergraduate philosophy student, as a commentary on Chapters 5-7 of Jonathan Haidt's The Righteous Mind and Richard Dawkins' The Selfish Gene. At the time, I was deeply engaged with questions about morality, intuition, and cultural evolution-but I now recognize that the essay may reflect eary-stage misinterpretations or theoretical simplifications of the theories involved, particularly with respect to Dawkins' memetics and Haidt's moral modularity. Rather than revise the original arguments to align with my current understanding, I have chosen to preserve the essay largely as it was-edited only for clarity and flow. I believe it still captures a valuable stage in my intellectual development and may offer useful questions, even where it stumbles on the answers. A version of this essay will also be made available on PubPub, where I plan to curate a collection of commentary essays under the community name The Imagined Mind.
